Our History
DRYSDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our History
From humble beginnings to a thriving school community –
Drysdale Primary School has been a proud part of the local community since 1875. The original school building – a sturdy brick structure with a slate roof – was constructed at a cost of £1,140. It consisted of one large classroom, a smaller infants’ room, and a raised gallery, built to accommodate up to 350 children. In its first year, the school welcomed 115 students.
Life at the school in the late 19th century was very different to what we know today. In fact, historical records show that one teacher even formally requested permission to park her horse on the school grounds – a delightful reminder of how much the world around us has changed!
The original 1875 building remains at the centre of the current school site, standing as a proud and lasting symbol of our heritage. Today, it has been thoughtfully repurposed as a performing arts room, meeting room and our school canteen, connecting past and present in a unique way.
As Drysdale and its community grew, so did the school. Over the years, we’ve expanded and modernised our facilities to meet the evolving needs of our students and families. From its rural beginnings to its current enrolment, Drysdale Primary continues to embrace progress while honouring its roots.
We’re proud of our rich history, and excited to build on this legacy for generations to come.
