Drysdale Primary School

Principal’s Update

Students Out and About

Last week we had several students taking part in a variety of events outside school. Our senior girls headed off to Hot Shots tennis and did an awesome job. They played well and have qualified for the next level! I also took a group of senior students to a volleyball tournament, while they didn’t notch up a win, they played well, improved throughout the day and most importantly played with great spirit and had fun!

School Council

We have several vacancies on School Council that we would like to fill. If you are interested and would like to come along to a meeting to see what it is all about, please feel free to contact me via the office. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 22nd October at 6pm.

Drysdale Community Market Sunday 20th October

This Sunday marks the start of the Drysdale Community Market season, and we are looking for new volunteers to help with the running of the market on the day. If you are interested in helping, please pop into the market on Sunday to have a look and a chat with myself or one of the other volunteers to see what you can do to help. The market runs from 9am -1pm but set up begins on the day at 7am.  The markets continued survival depends on having enough volunteers to spread the workload. Most roles only require a few hours on the Sunday, once a month.

Thunderstorm asthma – be prepared this pollen season

Grass pollen season, which typically runs from October to December each year in Victoria, brings an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms. It also increases the risk of thunderstorm asthma. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening.

Drysdale PS will implement a range of measures to keep our school community safe as the risk of thunderstorm asthma increases.

Many of our staff are trained in asthma first aid, and we will monitor the VicEmergency app to receive thunderstorm warnings, and, where appropriate, keep students indoors when weather forecasts identify greater risk.

During the season, there are some things you can do to prepare and protect yourself and your family:

  • If your child has ever had asthma, talk to your doctor about what you can do to help protect them from the risk of thunderstorm asthma this pollen season, including updating your asthma action plan. Taking an asthma preventer properly and regularly is key to preventing asthma, including thunderstorm asthma.
  • If your child has hay fever, see your pharmacist or doctor for a hay fever treatment plan and check if you should have an asthma reliever puffer. These are available from a pharmacy without a prescription.
  • If your child has hay fever and experiences wheezing and coughing, it is important to make sure they don’t also have asthma. Speak to your doctor about an asthma action plan.
  • Where possible, avoid being outside during thunderstorms from October to December, especially during the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows. If you have your air conditioning on, turn it to ‘recirculate’.

Protect yourself this pollen season – managing asthma and allergies matters.

For more information, speak to your doctor. You can also visit the Better Health Channel website.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club

We have enjoyed yet another year of success in the Breakfast Club. Local community groups including the Uniting Church and Lions Club have been very generous in their donations to this Club and its continued running on Monday and Friday mornings. We thank you all for your continued support and to the students who visit each morning. Our wonderful Kids Matter and Junior School Council students will be back to helping out in the mornings this term too, we loved having them serve their peers last term and having their help again this term will be amazing.

Please note that there will be no Breakfast Club on Monday 28 October and Monday 18 November this term

Parents And Friends Group

With the fundraising efforts from the Parents and Friends group, 4 new picnic tables have been added to the yard. These are a great addition to the school adding more seating options for parents and kids. Parents and Friends would like to send a huge THANK YOU to Gus Robb from Bellarine Wood Shed who made these amazing picnic tables and installed them.  Things like these wouldn’t be possible if parents didn’t buy tickets to our events, purchase pie packs, volunteer your time, so THANK YOU to parents and staff as well for making these happen.

Tea towel – this year Parents and Friends are running a tea towel fundraiser. Kids have been busy doing little drawings that will be added to the tea towels for you to purchase. These would make great Christmas gifts and good keepsakes as well, a sample tea towel will be in the office for you to have a look at. Order forms due by Tuesday, 22 October – please bring the correct money and pay at the office or to your child’s teacher.

Bunnings BBQ – Parents and Friends have been lucky enough to have a spot at Bunnings Leopold for a BBQ on Sunday, 20th of October. Volunteers are crucial in the running of this event, if you could spare 1 hour please sign up for one of the 1 hour spots.
